A pre-flight is exactly what it sounds like.
Before each flight, the Captain carries out a check on the aircraft, to assess whether it is in navigable air. This inspection is thorough, involves the observation of each of the items on the checklist list and the recommendation is that each action described be read by a Pilot, and repeated by another, in order to maintain bilateral communication, in a clear and comprehensive way. I do this inspection, before every flight in my aircraft! Airline commanders also do it before every commercial flight, and even drone pilots are required to do a quick check. before taking off with your small aircraft. This inspection is a comprehensive assessment of the aircraft and is a critical flight safety-related check that is actually required by the National Civil Aviation Agency.
